Dinner for 10 - for only a dime!

This past weekend week served dinner for my wife, kids and siblings, 10 of us in all, for only $.10!

Here's how we did it:

We served Campbell's Select Soup we had purchased several months ago from Stop 'n Shop, six cans for a nickel (8 cans fed us all, with leftovers). We also served bagels as a side that had been given to us for free from local bagel shop. In addition, we served matzoh crackers that had been on sale or free at several stores in our area recently.

I will admit that some of us opted to have oyster crackers which were the most expensive part of the meal, purchased for $.99 for an.8 ounce box from the discount rack at a local grocery store - that does put us over the ten cent meal cost ...

While the deal that made this possible, the great soup sale, is in the past, I will certainly keep you advised of any similar deals, provided you keep checking back!

Personal Experience: Making Money Online

Well, I promised some personal stories and experiences, and am going to start with an exciting one: making money online!

Having lost a lot of money in ready-made, turn-key business opportunities, by the time I started online I was much more interested in self-run ideas. By far, my most successful has been an online store that cost less than $40 to set up (after years of trial and error, though!).

Here's how I managed it: I registered a domain name at godaddy.com. There's often coupon codes to get your domain name even cheaper, I think BOOK is a ciouppon code that currently gives 10% off.

Next, get a web host. Asmallorange.com is wonderful, very responsive, and cheap - $30 per year gets you a great account that is perfect for the starting website. Note, this is also the most expensive part of your setup. (It helps if you mention that "dyinglight" referred you!)

To process payments, Paypal is best. Yes, they have their problems, but follow the rules and you should do fine. I've looked for years for less expensive credit card processing, but only paypal saves you from paying regular monthly fees. (Paypal will only charge you a small per-transaction fee).

Now, provided you chose Asmallorange.com, you can use thier fantastico feature to install your store software - for FREE! ZenCart is very highly rated, nad is a snap to set up with paypal and Fantasico. Then, after a few customizations, you are set to add your products! How successful have I been? Well, considering I only needed $40 to start, it's gone pretty well. I should add that this arrangement works well for downloads, such as ebooks. The only one I offer is free to my customers for now, but it certainly would help the profit margin if I made some informative PDF files, wouldn't it?

The idea for this post was suggested by a fellow blogger at Free Survey Lists and More. It's certainly worth a look to see what others have experienced in their own online money-making ventures.

Tax Time Reminders!

By the end of the week, most Americans will hae filed their taxes. Some of us have filed months ago, others will be in line at the post office at midnight. Either way, the lines at the post office, stacks of forms at the library, and media reports have us all thinking taxes.

Here's some tax-time tips:

- Check your witholdings. Did you get money back from the IRS this year? Perhaps your witholdings are set higher than necessary.

The amount of money that is withdrawn from your paycheck for "Federal Witholding" is actually an interest-free loan to Uncle Sam - from YOU! Sure, you get it back at the end of the year, but without the interest you could have earned.

Talk with your HR professional and review your W-4. Setting your witholding to a lower amount will increase the amount of your paycheck. If you have enough exemptions, and are bold enough, set them low enough that you will owe the IRS next year.

Then, put the additional money from each check into a savings account, such as an ING account. by the end of the year, you will have your "refund" in December - with interest! If you do owe the IRS anything, pay it as close to April 15 as you can, from the money in the savings account.

How much is this worth? Let's say you get a $2,000 refund at the end of the year. That's a bit over $160 a month you've been giving the IRS in advance. At 4% interest, compounded monthly, You are missing out on almost $600 interest!
